Get hands-on with the Enigma machine at Turing Fest

Dr Mark Baldwin

Last year, we announced a new partnership with our friends at the Turing Trust, the charity established by the surviving family of Alan Turing to continue the pioneering computer scientist’s legacy. We’re proud to have the Trust as the official charity of Turing Fest, and I’d encourage you to learn more about the remarkable IT literacy work they’re doing in Africa — and how you can help.

As part of the Trust’s presence at Turing Fest 2016, we were delighted to host a lunchtime session with Sir Dermot Turing, Alan’s nephew and biographer, talking about his uncle’s life and work — and particularly his wartime service at the Bletchley Park codebreaking facility.

For 2017, we’re going deeper into the ‘Secret War’, with a lunchtime session on Day 2 from Dr Mark Baldwin, a prolific author and speaker and renowned expert on WWII intelligence and codebreaking. Mark holds the unusual distinction of having spent longer handling the Enigma machine than did anyone in the German armed forces, and provided the four-rotor U-boat model used in The Imitation Game.

In ‘Enigma: The Machine Turing Mastered‘, Mark will explore the origins and mechanics of Enigma, and how it was broken by Polish and British cryptanalysts. And here’s the best part: he’s bringing two of his own machines with him, to give you a rare opportunity to get hands-on with these amazing contraptions! It’s going to be a fascinating look inside a remarkable historical artifact and pivotal piece of cryptographic technology.

The session starts at 1:15pm on Thursday 3 August, and is open to everyone attending the Engineering and Marketing tracks. (Haven’t got tickets yet? Time’s running out!)

Just for fun, here’s how this post looks encrypted with Enigma, c. 1941…
